This Marvelous District 9 Cake was made by Sandy Tucker of The Cake Engineer NZ for the Cakes From Middle Earth Cake Collaboration. This cake shows the District 9 fence with the alien spaceship in the sky above and Christopher Johnson and Oliver on the rubbish heap. The rubbish heap has lots of cans of cat food, bottles, and eggs cartons. Sandy chose this theme because one of her favorite Peter Jackson films is District 9 and she grew up in Africa and could relate to the humor and the locations in the film.
Christopher and Oliver Johnson were made using modeling chocolate. Fondant was used to make the spaceship. It has LEDs that light up. An acrylic rod lit by a small LED light supports the spaceship. The cans, bottles, egg cartons were made using chocolate. There are edible labels on th cat food. The rubish heap rock and sand were made using Rice Krispies treats covered in fondant and brown sugar. There ia a smoke machine attached to the rear. The signs on the fence are edible. The cake board is 60 centimeters by 60 centimeters. Christopher Johnson is 30 centimeters tall and Oliver is 15 centimeters tall. The aliens took many hours to complete. It took a lot of edible rubbish to fill the rubbish heap. The spaceship is 40 centimeters in diameter and is suspended 50 centimeters above the cake board.
