I made this Steampunk Horton Hears A Who Cake for the Steam Cakes – Steampunk Collaboration. I am honored to be a part of this amazing collaboration.
I like Doctor Who and Dr. Seuss and wanted to combine the two themes with a play on the words, Horton Hears A Who. This time the Who is Doctor Who and his TARDIS.
The gears and the spiral clock face to the right of the TARDIS symbolize the images at the beginning of Doctor Who with Peter Capaldi, the twelfth Doctor.
I decided to go a simple color scheme of blue, gray, white, and black, instead of the traditional metallic colors of steampunk. I went to the Atlanta High Museum of Art and saw the Daniel Arsham exhibit of a complete Japanese Zen garden that was mostly blue with some items done using gray and white. I liked the way everything was a small set of colors, so I decided to use a similar color scheme on my cake.
I did not just want the traditional blue TARDIS, so I made the background blue and made the TARDIS white and gray with the blue background showing through. I placed gears for the windows of the TARDIS and the light on top of the TARDIS and gave Horton gears as well to add to the Steampunk theme. Horton is holding a black gear in his trunk, instead of a pink fuzzy clover. I made the letter ‘O’ in the words Who and Horton to be shaped like a gear.
