This wonderful steampunk girl was made by Catalina Anghel from Catalina Anghel azucar arte
This Marvelous steampunk piece was created for the Steam Cakes – Steampunk Collaboration. To celebrate the Steampunk International Day, Cake Artists from around the world gathered to create their own edible Steampunk masterpieces.
I also want to spotlight Catalina Anghel and share my interview.
Tell me about yourself. How long have you been decorating cakes? How did you learn to decorate? Do you decorate professionally? Have you taught any cake decorating classes? Have you competed in any cake competitions?
My name is Catalina Anghel and I am a sugar flowers artist/ instructor and cake decorator based in Vila-real, Spain. I bake and decorate cakes since always, with my mum and grandma, but as a professional I started about 7 years ago. I took some classes but that happened only lately, as I wanted to learn how to sculpt modeling chocolate busts- so went with the best- Marta Hidalgo- and learnt a lot..
I participated in many cake competitions and won many medals and most important was the Global Sugar Artists Raising Star Award 2018- was a big surprise for me, I never imagined something like that would ever happen to me.
What is the name of your business/bakery, where you are located, what area you serve, and what you specialize in.
I have my own online sugar flowers academy where I teach sugar lovers all over the world how to make beautiful free formed sugar flowers. But what I love most is my face to face classes- I travel the world teaching and had the privilege to meet great and talented people and know marvelous countries from Hong Kong to México..

Tell me about your cake. What was the inspiration for your cake? How did you create it?
My cake for this collaboration is a 2 D bust sculpted and Zeppelins – a brave girl – the first woman that drove a Zeppelin ´s story – and here it goes☺
Aida de Acosta de Alba (1884-1962) lived in the United States, daughter of Ricardo Acosta, a wealthy Cuban executive of a certain shipping line. Frequently Brazilian Alberto Santos Dumont (1873-1932), a pilot and blimp builder, lands his ship in front of the restaurant he prefers, takes a bite and returns to flight.
The Cuban is fascinated by such a spectacle. And he gets a mutual friend to introduce him to the demented sublime.
She convinces Santos Dumont to provide her with three lessons in airship navigation. But he accomplishes more: he offers him —unique case—to make a solo flight, on his No. 9 Airship.
In 1903, nearly half a year before the Wright brothers made their flights on Kitty Hawk, Aida takes off to the Parisian sky.
From the ground, riding a bicycle, Santos Dumont, waving his arms, transmits instructions to him, following the ship, which travels at 15 miles per hour.
Aida’s going to have a public during her landing. He performs it at Chateau de Bagatelle, on a stadium where a polo match between the British and the English is taking place.
The spectators, among bewildered and chivalrous, assist the lady in her descent from the bell.
Saints Dumont, anxiously, pounces upon her to know if she had felt fear during the journey. Aida’s response: “No, it was most pleasant.” And he exclaims, “Miss, you are the first aero driver in the world!”
Do you remember the first cake you decorated? When and why did you decide that you wanted to create cakes as a business / hobby?
My first cake decorated that I remember was one made by my mum and I wanted to decorate it .. It was a complete disaster but so yummy ☺ I only was 7 years old and mum still remembers it ☺
