This wonderful cake was made by Doreen Zilske from My Sugar Moments
This Marvelous cake was created for the Steam Cakes – Steampunk Collaboration. To celebrate the Steampunk International Day, Cake Artists from around the world gathered to create their own edible Steampunk masterpieces.
This adorable steampunk cake features a mouse and a child mouse riding in a teacup in a vehicle. The cake board has tire tracks on it.
I also want to spotlight Doreen Zilske and share my interview.
Tell me about yourself. How long have you been decorating cakes? How did you learn to decorate? Do you decorate professionally? Have you taught any cake decorating classes? Have you competed in any cake competitions?
I became fascinated with sugar art in 2014. I wanted to surprise a friend with a wedding cake. At first I read a lot on the internet and watched countless videos. It was a completely new world for me, because until then I had neither baked nor eaten cake. But I was immediately fascinated and still am. For me it is the most beautiful hobby in the world, because we relax while modeling and being creative and also make other people happy. I taught myself most of the skills such as baking, filling, ganache, decorating, and modeling. However, I am far from being able to do everything, and I certainly will never be, because everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.
I attended courses for modeling human figures and painting on fondant. The courses helped me a lot, but I’m still practicing. I like to attend professional courses, these professionals have so much to give and you also get to know other creative people and make a friendship.
In the past years I have participated in 4 cake competitions and have won 1 x bronze, 1 x silver, 3 x gold and 2 x Best of Class.

Tell me about your cake. What was the inspiration for your cake? How did you create it?
When I received the invitation for the Steampunk Collaboration from Carla Rodrigues, my heart leapt with joy because I love Steampunk. I wanted to combine the traditional, the antique with mechanical elements in combination with the vintage style.
And so this vehicle with a porcelain cup was created with the two mice as occupants, curiously looking ahead, what there is still to be discovered.
I modeled pasta model and pasta bouquet with Saracino. My favorite tools are from CerArt and Sugar Shapers and the brushes from Global Sugar Artist Network. The colors used are from Fractal.
Do you have a favorite story about a cake you made? Not every idea for a cake or a sugar element is directly fixed, many elements are created intuitively. From my perspective, my first cake was a disaster. The rose petals were very thick and the colors were not natural. They had many imperfections. But I was hooked on decorating cakes and still am. Today I love to surprise my family and friends with a cake. The astonished and shining eyes are the most beautiful praise.
